Life at the Water’s Edge

For more than a decade, I have photographed the ways people live alongside water across India—along rivers, coasts, and small waterways where daily life unfolds at the edge of land and water.

These places are part of everyday life. Fishermen prepare their nets, pilgrims bathe in sacred rivers, families gather along the shore, and children run into the surf. Water is both a livelihood and a place of ritual, shaping daily routines in quiet but constant ways.

The photographs in this project were made over time in different parts of the country. Together they reflect a simple observation: wherever there is water, people gather around it—for work, devotion, rest, and play.
