FACES IN THE LIGHT OF THE GANGES
In November 2024, I journeyed through four timeless cities—Kolkata, Patna, Bodh Gaya, and Varanasi—to create a portrait series that reflects the spirit and humanity of Eastern and Northern India. These are not just photographs, but quiet encounters—fleeting yet intimate—between a traveler and the soul of the land.
As a portrait photographer, I’m drawn to expressions shaped by tradition, faith, and everyday resilience. From the graceful stillness of an elderly woman in Bihar to the unwavering gaze of a sadhu at the ghats of Varanasi, and the radiant smile of a child wrapped in color—each frame reveals a story deeply rooted in its place and moment.
Most of the portraits were captured using natural light, while a few used subtle flash to enhance ambient tones without breaking the intimacy of the scene, the images honor the rhythm of the streets, the softness of early mist, and the quiet presence of each subject. My intent was to witness, to preserve these fleeting moments as portraits of dignity, connection, and truth.
This series is part of my ongoing visual exploration of India’s human landscape, focusing on the people of Eastern and Northern India. I hope these portraits resonate with viewers, collectors, and curators who value authenticity, emotion, and cultural storytelling.
